UMD Offers A Day of Teacher Training

HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM TEACHERS – DAY OF TRAINING AT UMD:

Please join us for a day of training at UMD’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism in College Park on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The cost is $25, which will help to defray costs of the training day. Lunch will be provided.

The schedule:

* A welcome from the college, and donuts and coffee, 9 – 9:30 a.m. – Gene Roberts Room, 3rd floor, Knight Hall.

* A morning mobile apps session, with a focus on collecting, editing and uploading video and photos with smart phones. Students will practice creating a video story using the app Videolicious. 9:30 a.m. to noon, Gene Roberts Room, Knight Hall. Session instructor: Ronald Yaros, associate professor of mobile and multiplatform journalism at UMD.

* A lunch Q&A session on participants’ high school news Web sites  (12:15 to 1:30 p.m. – Gene Roberts Room.) Session instructor: Mark W. Smith, a mobile editor at The Washington Post, a former social media manager at USA Today, and a former assistant editor of digital media at the Detroit Free Press.

* An afternoon graphics session: creating print and interactive digital graphics with free tools (1:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. – Room 2103.) Session instructor: Sean Mussenden, UMD’s Capital News Service digital director.

If you mail the form, you may enclose a check for $25 made out to University of Maryland, or you may bring it with you Sept. 24. Registration deadline: Sept. 23. We can accommodate up to 18 participants.
