Governor Hogan signing the New Voices Maryland Act into law.

In April 2016, Governor Larry Hogan signed the New Voices Maryland Act (SB 764) into law. The act, which protects the free speech and free press rights of student journalists in Maryland public secondary schools and which for the first time clarifies the circumstances under which school administrators can control the content of student media distributed in their schools, goes into effect on October 1, 2016.

The law encourages student reporters and editors to perform responsibly in their role as scholastic journalists and will encourage in-school media to model the principles of the First Amendment in their schools.
