Hands-on skill building and knowledge acquisition on key editorial, design and production aspects of student newspapers and school yearbooks. On-site critiques of student publications.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY:

• 9:45  Check-in
• 10:15- 11:45  Morning workshop (choose one of three options)
• 11:45-12:45  Pizza lunch, networking, onsite publication critiques
• 12:45-2:15  Afternoon workshop (choose one of three options)
• 2:30-3:00  Wrap-up gathering

CONCURRENT SESSIONS:

• Writing for an Audience: Learn how to write clearly and succinctly for multiple forms of journalism, including digital and print platforms.
• Ramping Up Graphics & Design. Learn how to use Canva to create compelling graphic designs and motion graphics for a variety of student media content.
• Social Media in News Coverage. Learn how to incorporate the use of social media platforms, especially TikTok, in reporting for a student publication.
• Artificial Intelligence: Learn how to tread confidently, legally, and ethically in how you incorporate generative AI into editorial and design work on your school newspaper, yearbook and other student media.
• Videography and Photography Techniques: This session focuses on how to use lights (including natural light) for effective video and photography, especially for interviews and portraits. Students will learn how to position themselves during event coverage to capture distinctive and newsworthy angles.
• Student Leadership of Publications: Learn the skills and mindsets of serving as effective editors on your school yearbook, student newspaper or other student media.
